Grand Bells Bed And Breakfast

Grand Bells Bed And Breakfast is a small three-star guest house in the very core of Zagreb, at Kaptol 26 in the Upper Town, right beside the cathedral and only 150 metres from the pedestrian stretch of Tkalčićeva, where the city's bars, cafés and restaurants gather. Free WiFi runs throughout.

The three rooms are all air-conditioned and non-smoking, each with a private bathroom with shower, an LCD satellite TV and a work desk. They range from a compact single to a deluxe double with a king-size bed and a sofa bed that sleeps three, so both solo travellers and small families are covered.

Breakfast is continental, served buffet-style each morning. Zagreb Cathedral is a two-minute walk, the Dolac market and Ban Jelačić Square just beyond, and the trams of the lower town within easy reach. Guests rate the property 8.6, with an exceptional 9.7 for its location.

The B&B's rooms

Grand Bells has three rooms in a townhouse in the Kaptol quarter, each named for what it offers rather than dressed up. The Standard Double is a compact 17 m² room for two; the Deluxe Double adds a sofa bed alongside a king-size bed and sleeps up to three, useful for a small family; and the Single Room suits one traveller at 13 m². All are non-smoking and air-conditioned, with a private bathroom with shower, hairdryer and free toiletries, an LCD satellite TV and a work desk. Cots and extra beds can be arranged on request for a fee, and every room has free WiFi.

Is this the B&B for you?

Yes, if...

  • You want to sleep in the historic centre: the cathedral, Dolac market and Ban Jelačić Square are all a short walk away, and the location scores an exceptional 9.7.
  • You are travelling without a car: trams, the airport shuttle stop and almost every sight are within walking distance.
  • You are a solo traveller: it has a dedicated single room with its own bathroom, rare among small guest houses.
  • You are three together or a couple with a child: the Deluxe Double pairs a king-size bed with a sofa bed.
  • You value friendly, hands-on hosts: staff score a high 9.4 and speak English and Croatian.

Perhaps not, if...

  • You want to pay by card at the property: this bed and breakfast accepts cash only.
  • You are travelling with a pet: pets are not allowed here.
  • You need on-site parking or step-free access: there is no private car park, upper floors are reached by stairs only, and paid public parking is in a garage nearby.
  • You expect full hotel facilities: with three rooms there is no restaurant, bar or lift, and facilities are the lowest-scoring category at 8.1.

Facilities and amenities

This is a small three-star bed and breakfast rather than a full hotel, and its strength is a central location done simply and well. Every room is air-conditioned and non-smoking, with a private bathroom, free WiFi throughout and heating for the colder months. Breakfast is continental, served buffet-style each morning. The building is a traditional Upper Town townhouse, so the upper floors are reached by stairs and there is no lift; public parking is available in a garage nearby for a daily fee, by reservation. Two things to plan for: payment at the property is cash only, and pets are not accepted.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Grand Bells sits at Kaptol 26, right beside Zagreb Cathedral and at the foot of the Upper Town, so the whole historic centre is on your doorstep. From Franjo Tuđman Airport, about 10 km southeast, the Pleso Prijevoz shuttle runs to Zagreb Bus Station every half hour between roughly 06:00 and 20:30 for around €9, taking 35 to 40 minutes; a taxi or ride-hail covers the same trip in about 20 minutes. From the bus station a short tram ride reaches Ban Jelačić Square, then it is a five-minute walk uphill, or a quick taxi to the door. Zagreb Central Station is only about 1.3 km away and also linked by tram. Once you are here you can leave the car behind: paid parking is in a garage nearby by reservation, and almost everything worth seeing is within walking distance.

What to see

You are in the medieval core. Kaptol runs straight down into Dolac, the open-air market Zagreb calls its belly, a sea of red umbrellas best visited before ten for the freshest produce. A few steps on lies Ban Jelačić Square, the city's meeting point, while the café-lined Tkalčićeva street just below the property fills every evening. Climb through the thirteenth-century Stone Gate, with its candlelit shrine, into the Upper Town for St Mark's Church and its famous tiled roof, the Lotersčak Tower and the short historic funicular. The quirky Museum of Broken Relationships and the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art are minutes away. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; December brings Advent in Zagreb, repeatedly voted one of Europe's best Christmas markets. Trams run everywhere, but the centre is small enough to explore on foot.
